Sri Sathya Sai Guidelines for Good Health

Sunday, July 9, 2000

In the evening, Swami came for Darshan at 3.00 pm. Swami came near the teacher’s block and spoke to Prof. Anil Kumar.

Swami : A new lecturer is going to join your Institute. She is going to work in your department.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, is a new lecturer coming?

Swami : Yes, she is having an experience of 28 years. I thought of sending her to Anantapur campus, but cooking problem for her husband. That’s why,
I thought I will send her here.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, is she a devotee of Swami?

Swami : Yes, I have known her since she was five years. She is very much devoted to Swami. When her parents forced her to marry, she said that if they want her to get married, that person should come to Parthi and visit Swami frequently.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, he comes frequently. I think he came recently, one month ago.

Swami : Yes, he came last month. I only performed their marriage. (Then Swami enquired with Sri Bhagia about the health of his daughter.) How is your daughter?

Sri Bhagia : Now she is alright, Swami. But last night she was not well. She took injection also.

Swami : Injections are very dangerous, they are like poison. You can take pills,
but injections are not good.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, injections will give immediate relief, isn’t it?

Swami : They give immediate relief but after sometime it will increase. Relief reaction. When a person takes injection, his body becomes weak and he starts sweating. It only gives temporary relief.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, how to control diabetes?

Swami : Diabetes has symptoms like sweating, vomiting sensation, headache, etc. Not only diabetes, any disease like malaria and typhoid is already present in our body. The only thing is that we have to control them. We should not allow them to come out. In the same way, all tastes like sweetness, sourness, bitterness; everything is present in our body itself.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, if everything is present, they say that the tongue is the means for knowing the tastes.

Swami : No, no. When we eat something, the taste comes from inside. Tongue is only a temporary medium.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, how to control the diseases?

Swami : You answer.

Prof. A. K. : By controlling thoughts and keeping mind in control, Swami.

Swami : Thinking of keeping mind in control itself is a thought. It should come by itself. Mind should always be in control.

Prof. A. K. : Swami! Businessmen have to think a lot; then they cannot control the diseases.

Swami : It is compulsory. They can’t help it.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, does diabetes come first or blood pressure come first?

Swami : First, blood pressure comes and it is followed by diabetes.
(Swami laughed.) It is like a younger brother, but once if any of them comes, they cannot be cured again.

Prof. A. K. : How to control worries, Swami?

Swami : You answer.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, by repetition of God’s name.

Swami : Not by repetition of God’s name. You should be God Himself. In the same way, you should not be a lover, because if you are a lover, you may hate one person and you may love another. However, if you are Love itself, you can love everyone. (Elated at the answer given by Swami, Prof. Anil Kumar took Padanamaskar. To the School students who were holding cards) What is that? (Referring to the symbol of heart on the card.)

Student : Swami, Heart.

Swami : (Showing to Prof. Anil Kumar) Is this the shape of a heart?

Prof. A. K. : No, Swami.

Swami : (Pointing to the student) Did you see heart any time?

Student : No, Swami.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, recently (mentions a doctor’s name), he did heart transplantation.

Swami : Yes, they will perform heart transplantation, but it won’t work for much time. It is Srishti Rahasya (the secret of creation). No one can go against it. Today, it will come in newspapers that they performed heart transplantation. All press people will come and click photos. The next day, the same patient will be going to the graveyard. But no one will bother. Diabetes patients should not take more sweets. It is like a poison for them, especially sweets like Jalebi (a sweet popular in the countries of the Indian subcontinent) are very dangerous.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, can they eat all fruits?

Swami : No. They should not eat fruits like jackfruit and mango. They can take black grapes, watermelon. In these only 4% sugar is present. In Kharbooja (musk melon), 5% sugar is present. They can take either watermelon juice or Kharbooja juice.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, can they eat Sapota (commonly known as Chickoo in India and Sapodilla in English)?

Swami : Sapota! It will support the diseases. They should not eat vegetables like potato and beetroot. Dumpa Kuralu Tinte Vaalla Dumpa Tegutunde (A Telugu colloquial statement which means that tubers are not good for diabetic patients). (All burst into laughter because of the context and language of the phrase used by Swami.) They should not eat more. They should take wheat or ragi instead of rice. Rice converts itself into starch very fast; whereas wheat will take more time. The doctors advice diabetic patients to take three pills a day. But if they take even one pill extra, the effect of the pills will not be there. They should control their diet. You believe it or not, from the day I was born, nearly 75 years are over. I never had hunger. I eat for the sake of others. I never had sleep. They (people who stay with Swami) will be observing Me always. They will be thinking, “Why doesn’t Swami sleep? Why does He always keep walking?” For their satisfaction, I act as if I am sleeping. But I won't sleep. My two legs will never be together.

Prof. A. K. : Swami Karunyananda also used to say that Swami never eats or sleeps. (Swami Karunyananda was a very close devotee of Swami. He was a renunciant, and stayed with Swami and served Him for over three decades.)

Swami : Oh! He eats well. He wants all types of foods and all tastes.

Prof. A. K. : Swami, he lived for a long time.

Swami : He lived less than 90 years. (A student showed a card in which was written ‘Heart 2 Heart’. Seeing the number ‘2’, Swami said smilingly) for number two, they have constructed the facility near the old Hostel!

Swami pointed out the direction of the toilet with latrine facilities. At this everyone laughed heartily. Later, Swami went back to the interview room.
